Kia Ora everyone!
My name is Lara and I'm a first-year Architecture student at Victoria University of Wellington under the Kahotea Scholarship. As a Stage 1 Pinnacle student, my main passions lie in the spaces of sustainability and design. Through studying architecture, I hope to blend creativity with practical solutions to real-world challenges. I’m interested in sustainable construction, waste reduction, renewable energy, and blending the built and natural environments.
One of the most important takeaways from my experience in the Pinnacle Programme is leadership development, especially in the context of volunteering. In 2023 I completed my Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award, which led me to become involved in local and large scale volunteer projects. Since moving to university, I have become involved in the Wellington Plus Program at VUW to continue my passion.
Sailing is another thing I’m passionate about, and which has led me on so many amazing journeys. In 2022 I participated in the BLAKE Inspire for Sailors Program for environmental leadership. Upon completion of this program, I was accepted to embark on a Sub-Antarctic research expedition with the Sir Peter Blake Foundation and the New Zealand Defence Force. On Campbell Island, we collaborated with scientists to gather crucial data in aiding our understanding of climate change effects in the Antarctic region. This experience not only deepened my appreciation for these remote environments but also inspired a newfound goal to one day explore Antarctica itself.
Through the Pinnacle Programme, I've made many connections and developed key skills. I’m extremely excited to continue my journey, hopefully progressing through all the stages and achieving my aspirations with the support of the Pinnacle community.
