Joseph Samuels

Stage 1

Sport Leadership

Kia ora, my name is Joseph Samuels and I am a first-year student at the University of Auckland, studying a conjoint degree in Engineering(Part I) and Commerce, majoring in Finance and Innovation & Entrepreneurship. I am driven by service, Leadership and a desire to continually challenge myself.

I graduated from St Paul’s College (Ponsonby) in 2025, where I served as Head Boy and was awarded Dux and Best All-Round Student. During my time at the College, I captained the First XI cricket team, played in the First V basketball team, led the Special Character group, and served as a Young Vinnie. These experiences shaped my ability to lead diverse groups, stay disciplined, and contribute meaningfully to my community.

Beyond school, I have actively sought opportunities that push me outside my comfort zone. I have participated in Model United Nations assemblies, leadership forums, as well as sailing and outdoor programmes such as Outward Bound and most recently - Spirit of Adventure, where I was elected captain on Trainee Day. Through these experiences, I have developed resilience, adaptability, and a stronger sense of responsibility to serve others.

I am currently living in the University of Auckland Towers on a Māori floor, where I have found a strong sense of community grounded in shared values, culture, and mutual support. I am involved in university life through basketball, the Engineering Society, and SPIES, including the TKW mentoring programme. Adjusting to the demands of university has been challenging, but it has strengthened my ability to manage my time, stay disciplined, and maintain balance.

I am currently training for a 50km ultra marathon and remain actively involved in my faith community at St Patrick’s Cathedral. As I continue my first year at University, I am motivated to grow as a leader, deepen my connections, and contribute to the communities I am part of. I value surrounding myself with like-minded people who challenge and support one another. I am blessed to be a part of the Pinnacle Programme and know it will continue to serve me along my journey.
