I’m grateful to be joining Stage 2 of the Pinnacle Programme, and am excited to make the most of this inspiring opportunity. My name is Ivy Doak, and I’m currently in my final year at Westlake Girls High School. Above all, I value integrity and tenacity.
Fueled by my passion for air and spacecraft, I aim to enter the aerospace industry as a mechanical engineer to enable my ultimate goal to design spacecraft. For me, aerospace technology requires cooperation and perseverance with ingenuity, driven by curiosity and an adventurous spirit. It is also my aspiration to facilitate other women on their journeys in the STEM fields.
Last year, I was thrilled to be awarded Top Scholar in my year group. Also, one part of a four-strong Future Problem Solving team, we ranked amongst the top 10 teams in New Zealand, and I served as student librarian team leader, and leader in the Westlake Girls Amnesty International group.
This year, I’m enjoying responsibility for school fundraising efforts as service prefect. I was thankful to be selected by Canterbury University for their January 2023 WiE CAN residential engineering development program. The program was both inspiring and stimulating, culminating with a workshop and challenge run by Dawn Aerospace and the opportunity to talk to their incumbent mechanical engineers.
My free time is invested in equestrian eventing, in which I have placed in U21 national events, and been a representative for my area - Waitemata Rodney - in national championships. I thrive from the all-weather outdoor activity, combined with the demand for commitment, self-motivation, partnership and resilience. And outside of riding, my love for animals led to volunteering at the Rodney Animal Rescue Charitable Trust.
