Hi, my name is Devin Carr. I am currently a year 12 student at Upper Hutt College, where I am very passionate about the visual arts. For as long as I can remember I’ve always loved art. I remember sitting in my room with a pencil and paper, watching YouTube tutors on how to draw a face.
This has led me to explore many different medians, but my favourite has to be oil paints. I am currently taking Level 2 painting, where I am exploring the theme of growing up, by highlighting some of the key aspects of my life in my portfolio board. Likewise, for my Level 1 portfolio board, I followed the theme of how Covid-19 impacted the lives of students through sharing my experiences. For this I earned an excellence endorsement in art. I also placed first in Level 1 art and received the 2022 Nicholas Lowe Cup for visual arts. Although, my biggest achievement in my art was in 2020 when one of my graphite drawings for influencer Tilly Lockey was featured on a show called Art Jam, which was featured on CBBC in the UK.
Art has taught me a lot of things about myself, one of which is my capabilities. I believe that my skills are not a natural talent but are something I have learned through years of practice. After seeing my improvement over the years, it has shown me that I can achieve anything that I put my mind to. This made me realise that a lot of people don’t understand their true potential, as they aren’t naturally born with ‘talent’. I aspire to help people realise that they can achieve anything that they want through the skill of creating.
I feel so privileged to have been selected to participate in the Pinnacle Programme and I can’t wait to experience every opportunity that is given to me!
