Dean Richardson

Stage 1

Dean Richardson

My name is Dean Richardson and I am a graduating student of Rotorua Boys’ High School preparing to commence my study of a Bachelor of Biomedical Science at the University of Auckland.

My passions and interests diverge across many realms, however my strength lies predominantly in academia. In 2025, I was the Head Prefect of Rotorua Boys’ High School leading a prefect team of 24 in a pivotal moment in the school’s history with the introduction of a new principal. I am both honoured and humbled to have taken on this role and contributed to its legacy as my team and I drive for the continued success of Raukura.

In 2023, as one of two New Zealand students in the Rotary-Youth Research VOX programme; I collaborated with a global team of youth researchers to publish a position paper in the International Journal of Youth Led research. This paper focused on youth-led climate action and advocacy and its barriers. I then led my team as the principal investigator to publish a peer-reviewed theoretical research paper in 2025 seeking to provide an actionable framework for youth to overcome the identified barriers and fill the gap in youth leadership and climate action research.

I am honoured to be named as the Dux Litteratum throughout all five years of my high school journey. I also received the Yates Whanau trophy (2022) and Bishop Thompson trophy (2023) which recognised excellence across an array of pursuits, not purely academically.

Beyond academically, I am passionate about Shotokan Karate, dedicating nearly a decade to training. In 2024, I achieved my International Diploma of Shotokan Karate (Shodan Black Belt) and represented my clubs at many invitational tournaments which saw me take First place in Kata.

I also find expression through music. I am currently preparing for my Trinity Grade 6 piano examination, have accompanied the Raukura Choir, and have performed in the school’s production of Jersey Boys. I have also supported multiple other school productions through lighting and sound.

My involvement extends further across a range of activities: the Waikato Unistart Leadership Academy, debating, the Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award, and serving as the Returning Officer for the Rotorua Youth Council.

In 2026, I will be studying a Bachelor of Biomedical Science at the University of Auckland. I aspire to contribute to the development of life-saving medicines that improve health outcomes on a global scale, a goal shaped by both personal experience and a longstanding passion for science.

The people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do.
