Kia Ora! My name is Sophia Brock and I am currently a student at Mount Maunganui College. I feel really grateful to be involved in the Hyundai NZ Pinnacle Programme and I am excited to embrace the upcoming opportunities.
I am passionate about surfing, both competitively and for fun. When I'm not in the classroom, there is a good chance you will find me out in the ocean. Through surfing, I have been fortunate to have travelled around the world, met different people, and experienced different cultures.
My key achievements include being selected as the first reserve for the New Zealand Junior Surfing Team in 2022 and 2023. At the start of this year, I won the Surfing NZ Billabong Grom Series event at Mount Maunganui. Other achievements include finishing runner in the Under 18 girls longboard at the 2023 Surfing NZ Nationals and runner-up in the National Scholastics Championships 2020 and 2022.
I also love to play hockey and have previously played representative hockey for Tauranga at a national level. I have been in the Mount Maunganui College 1st XI Hockey team for the last 3 years, with a highlight of placing 2nd at the Jenny Hair Cup in 2022. I also work hard at school, with my key academic achievements being; runner-up dux in 2020, Excellence Endorsed in NCEA, and winning several school academic awards.
In the future, I plan to study at university and I am considering Law, Commerce, Health Science, and Engineering as my career options. My dream is to travel and make a positive impact helping young people in the less developed world to achieve their dreams.
