Kia Ora, I’m Nina. I’m a seventeen year old from Te Anau, a little town down South that not many people seem to have heard about! I grew up in a very multicultural family, my parents having immigrated from Europe 20 years ago. Hence I can speak Italian and German as well as English, and am currently learning Swahili.
People know me for my curiosity and empathy, and as someone who is constantly asking questions and making things. I am very much an outdoor person, enjoying hunting, hiking, kayaking, and archery. Growing up in Fiordland I have a strong connection to the natural world, it has always been my safe space, where I can mentally recharge. From protesting against the Monorail at only age four to establishing a research project on the South island Robins, Fiordland has always been a part of my life, and has shaped me as a person. It is a place that I love and want to protect, as it’s taught me so much, and given me opportunities not many people get.
As well as being an environmentalist/activist, I am also an author. I published my own children's book titled A walk in 2021, and I am a journalist for the youth magazine Create Happy.
My dream is to become a pediatric surgeon, as I love working with, as well as caring for children. I have always wanted to do something around the sciences in a way that can help someone. My ultimate goal would be to work as a pediatrician for the SASA foundation in Tanzania. I was lucky enough to spend a month in Arusha on a medical internship, and it’s safe to say I fell in love with the country, its culture, and its people. My goal is to go back some day, when I can really help, not just observe.
My voyage on the Spirit was in January 2024, and was exactly what I needed before beginning year 13, giving me a confidence boost and a whole new skill set in communication. I completed year 13 as Head Student and Dux of Fiordland College, with a scholarship to the University of Otago. The last year has been a gap year however, spent between Europe and Africa, where I have continued to grow and learn about myself and my culture. Heading into 2026, I am super excited to be in Stage 2. A massive thank you to the Pinnacle team, I can’t wait to continue working with you, your support is incredible.
