I’m Alex Tomkins, a 2019 graduate of the Pinnacle Programme. Originally from Wellington, I spent six years of my childhood living in Asia and then finished my schooling years in Tauranga. Despite not coming from a rural background, I became interested in the primary industries while living in Asia and seeing New Zealand agri-food products in international markets. I’m passionate about sustainable food production and am motivated to play a role in New Zealand producing healthy and high-quality food, and to get this to export markets.

In 2020 I graduated from Massey University with a Bachelor of AgriCommerce majoring in International AgriBusiness. I am based in the Bay of Plenty and currently work at Trevelyan’s Pack & Cool Ltd, the largest single site kiwifruit and avocado packhouse in New Zealand, in role of Business Improvement Coordinator and an Assistant Packhouse Manager during the kiwifruit packing season. In 2021, I was selected as one of nine councillors for the inaugural Food & Fibre Youth Network (He Tātai Rangahua) Council.

I applied for the Pinnacle Programme as it was an incredible opportunity to experience Spirit of Adventure and Outward Bound, two iconic programmes I had always wanted to take part in, as well as the personal development and mentoring the programme provides. Being involved in the Pinnacle Programme since 2016, has given me countless opportunities to meet new people, develop my leadership and teamwork skills, and push myself outside my comfort zone.

I wouldn’t be where I am today without the support and mentorship from the Pinnacle Programme. Through being part of Pinnacle, I joined a family and network of inspiring and driven individuals, who will continue to be close friends. My Pinnacle journey has given me the confidence to dream big and to take advantage of every opportunity life presents you, as in the words of Kurt Hahn “there is more in you than you think”.
